Volunteer call

Estepona City Council announces the collaboration agreement reached with the Cudeca Foundation to launch a social volunteer program aimed at serving older adults suffering from unwanted loneliness. This initiative responds to one of the most pressing social challenges of our time: the aging population and the progressive disconnection of many older adults from their family, neighborhood, and community environments.

The Councilor for Senior Citizens, Daniel García, pointed out that "unwanted loneliness is a public health problem that directly impacts the physical, mental, and emotional health of older adults. Despite its seriousness, it remains a silent reality that affects many older adults in their daily lives." Therefore, the City Council has reached a collaboration agreement with the Cudeca Foundation to develop initiatives that address this issue directly and personally.

The council member emphasized that volunteering has always been essential in the city. In this regard, he indicated that this collaboration aims to train volunteers who will accompany, listen, and be actively and respectfully present alongside those most in need. It's not just about providing companionship, but also about providing a meaningful connection that restores these people's voice, their story, and their sense of belonging to the community.

Daniel García emphasized that "this agreement with Cudeca represents an important step in providing comprehensive care for our seniors. We cannot allow anyone to grow old feeling alone or unsupported. Through volunteering, we strengthen the community network and emphasize the importance of providing support with sensitivity and respect." He also invited the public to participate in this program, noting that "anyone with a little time and a desire to help can make a real difference in someone's life."

Regarding volunteer training, Eva Víbora Martín, from Cudeca's Volunteer and Research Department, explained that the training program will address both practical and emotional aspects of mentoring, including effective communication skills, the design of meaningful activities, handling complex situations, and knowledge of local resources. "All of this is done with an ethical perspective and a commitment to human dignity," she emphasized.

For her part, Inmaculada Ruiz, head of Cudeca's volunteer program, emphasized that this program is increasingly necessary due to the changing family model in our society. "Therefore, it is necessary to create a strong network of volunteers to serve those in need," she stated.

In addition, the Councilor for Social Welfare, María Aguilar, announced that there will be 30 places available for this volunteer training, encouraging both associations and individuals to register. "We invite all those interested to participate by writing to voluntariado@estepona.es."

With this initiative, Estepona City Council and Cudeca reaffirm their commitment to creating a more just, empathetic, and supportive society, where no one has to face old age alone. They also call on the public to volunteer and actively participate in the change.
