HOUSE OF THE TEJERINAS

Exhibition "mathematical walk "al-andalus"

The Estepona City Council and the Fundación Descubre will present the exhibition 'Paseo Matemático Al-Ándalus' on Wednesday at the Casa de Las Tejerinas

The exhibition, which will be inaugurated next Wednesday the 15th at 12:00 noon, offers a tour of the Andalusian monumental heritage through its mathematical concepts.

The Alhambra in Granada, the Mosque and the Synagogue in Córdoba, together with the Real Alcázar, the Cathedral and the Torre del Oro in Seville, are the protagonists of this popularizing initiative that integrates mathematics, art, technology and tourism, and which will remain open to the public. Until March 31st.

The Estepona City Council and the Discover Foundation will inaugurate this Wednesday the 15th, at 12:00, in the Casa de las Tejerinas, the exhibition 'Paseo Matemático Al-Ándalus'. An exhibition where art, science and heritage are connected with mathematics in a journey that covers, through its panels, the rich Andalusian monumental heritage of the Caliphate, Almohad and Nasrid times.

The deputy mayor of the Socio-Cultural Area, María Begoña Ortiz; the director of Fundación Descubre, Teresa Cruz Sánchez, and the scientific director of the project, Álvaro Martínez Sevilla, who, after the opening of the exhibition, will guide a visit. Likewise, the directors and mathematics teachers of the public and private secondary schools of the municipality will attend: IES Monterroso, Mediterraneo, Mar de Alborán, Puerta del Mar and Professor T. Hormigo, and schools Juan XXIII, San José, Internacional Atalaya, Atlas American School of Malaga and Queens British Grammar School.

The exhibition, which will be open to the public until March 31, offers a renewed look at the buildings of the Andalusian period, on which a 'layer' of mathematical concepts is embodied that opens the door to a greater understanding of their motivation, whether defensive, religious or decorative. The visitor, through 26 panels, will be able to appreciate the variety of cultural and social concepts that are expressed and synthesized in various mathematical objects and functions, which help their understanding, recognition and interpretive assessment, beyond the simple identification of purely geometric shapes that appear on the walls of Andalusian palaces.

Thus, from the Caliphate era, it takes the Mosque of Córdoba as a reference and, more specifically, its domes, arches and monumental portals. From the Almohad and Mudejar period, it reviews the Real Alcázar, the Torre del Oro and the Seville Cathedral, with the Giralda (the old minaret) and the doors that have been preserved from the Seville aljama. Finally, the Alhambra in Granada represents the Nasrid period.

Specifically, the exhibition deals with various mathematical concepts: symmetry, proportion, hierarchy and order, modulation, tessellation, friezes, muqarnas, knots, arches (eccentric, pointed...), polygons (starred), geodesics, orientation (geographical, astronomical and solar). ), Releaux triangle, homothety, curves in decoration and anthropometry.

Along with this, crossed influences are analyzed through the concept of 'matmeme', that is, those mathematical uses that are replicated mimetically over time in designs, styles or proportions. An opportunity to connect the monumental legacy with mathematical ideas such as symmetry, order, geodesic, modulation, anthropometry, polygons or polyhedrons.

Math Walks

The Mathematical Walks are a project promoted by the Discover Foundation, co-financed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Department of University, Research and Innovation of the Junta de Andalucía. Started in 2017, it has just completed a second phase focused on the Andalusian period.

Along with the traveling exhibition, Paseo Matemático al-Ándalus counts as dissemination results a series of guided tours, a mobile application that allows the mathematical explanations to be transferred in situ to the different monuments, as well as a virtual exhibition.

In addition to the aforementioned institutions, the project includes the participation of the University of Granada, the University of Córdoba, the Ministry of Educational Development and Vocational Training, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, the Board of the Alhambra and Generalife, the Institute Andalusian Historical Heritage (IAPH), the Royal Alcázar of Seville, the Mosque-Cathedral Monumental Complex of Córdoba, the Cabildo of the Cathedral of Córdoba, the Cabildo Cathedral of Seville, the Spanish Navy and RTVA.

The scientific team, led by Álvaro Martínez, is made up of Sergio Alonso (UGR), Carlos Ureña (UGR), Enrique Infante (University of Seville), Tomás Morales (University of Córdoba), Francisco Javier Roldán (Laboratory of Archeology and Architecture of the city) and Fernando Blasco (Polytechnic University of Madrid). They are joined by the dissemination and communication team, coordinated by Silvia Alguacil and Teresa Cruz, as well as the disseminator Juan García (UNIA). The photographer Rocío Ortega Aguilera and the companies Rockin'Pixels, Everyware and 3D Vista collaborate on the project.
